**Skydiving Instructor and Student Killed After Encountering Dust Devil**
A skydiving instructor and her student died Friday after a tragic accident involving a dust devil in Southern California. The incident occurred in Perris, Riverside County, when the duo's parachute malfunctioned following their encounter with a brief whirlwind.
The instructor, identified as 28-year-old Devrey LaRiccia from Menifee, was pronounced dead at the scene. Her student, 28-year-old Kayla Black, succumbed to her injuries at the hospital two days later, according to officials.
The Riverside County Sheriff's Office reported that deputies responded to Skydive Perris, known for its extensive and highly regarded facilities, located about 70 miles southeast of Los Angeles. Both victims were found in an open field with severe injuries and were transported to the hospital, where LaRiccia died the same day and Black passed away shortly after.
Foul play is not suspected, and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is investigating the incident, focusing on parachute packing and flight rules. The FAA stated it would defer further investigation to local authorities if no regulatory violations are found.
Skydive Manager Dan Brodsky-Chenfeld expressed deep sorrow over LaRiccia's death, highlighting her passion for skydiving and her impact on the community. LaRiccia’s partner, Freddie Chase, explained that the accident happened during her final jump of the day when they encountered a dust devil, which caused their canopy to spin uncontrollably.
Dust devils, small whirlwinds formed by rapid surface heating, are common but can be dangerous for skydivers. Chase described how LaRiccia managed to avoid one dust devil but was caught by another, leading to the fatal crash.
Chase, devastated by the loss, has set up a fundraiser that has raised nearly $60,000 to help cover LaRiccia's funeral costs. Black’s memorial fundraiser has also raised over $33,000. Tributes have poured in, celebrating the vibrant lives of both women and their lasting impact on those who knew them.
